How to write a review worth reading

Four habits that turn a review into something the next shopper actually uses.

01

Be specific

Name the branch, the date, what you bought. "Bought a Hisense fridge from their Wuse branch in March" tells the next shopper far more than "Great shop".

02

Cover what mattered

Pricing transparency, delivery time, communication, after-sales support. Concrete details others can check against.

03

Say what worked and what did not

The most useful reviews are not the raves or the rants. They explain what the business did well and where they fell short.

04

Stick to your experience

Your firsthand experience is what helps. Avoid speculation about intent or repeating what someone else told you.

The rules, briefly

  • Your real experience. Reviews must be from someone who actually used the business.
  • Honest opinions, civilly expressed. Strong views are welcome. Insults and slurs are not.
  • You can edit anytime. Update your review if the situation changes.

What is not allowed

  • No paid reviews. Accepting payment for a review violates the FCCPA.
  • No fake transactions. Reviews about businesses you have not used.
  • No private data. Do not post anyone's NIN, BVN, or contact details.

Common questions

Will my name be public?
Yes. We display the name on your Ratecrest account on every review you write. Accountability is part of what makes the signal honest. We protect your contact details, payment information, and other private data under our NDPA-compliant privacy policy.
Can I be paid to write a review?
No. Accepting payment, free products, or other compensation in exchange for a review violates our review policy and the FCCPA. If you have been offered payment for a review, tell us.
Can I edit or delete a review later?
Yes. Edit anytime from your account. Edits show as edited on the public review. You can also delete your own reviews at any time.
The business replied. Do I have to respond?
No. Replies are public, you can read them, but you are not required to reply back. If the issue has been resolved, updating your review reflects that for the next shopper.
What if the business retaliates against me?
Retaliation against reviewers, including legal threats designed to silence honest reviews, is a serious violation of our content moderation policy and likely the FCCPA. Forward any retaliation through our contact form and we will investigate.
How does Ratecrest verify reviews?
Every review goes through automated verification before publishing. Higher-risk reviews are held for human moderation. The full process is in How we verify reviews.
